Ulysses has been part of this community for many years, working to make it a better place.
As Treasurer I restored ANC 4C to a condition of financial compliance by conducting forensic accounting, drafting and filing delinquent quarterly financial reports. The impact of the pandemic was particularly hard felt among retail businesses along the upper 14th Street corridor. With other 4C commissioners I authorized grants which provided local business with tech assistance, purchase of sanitizing stations and training in revised public space regulations through Uptown Main Street and supported the proposed planned unit development at 4618 14th Street NW which will create over 65 deeply affordable housing units. The project received final approval from the Zoning Commission on September 8, 2022.
I've served as Treasurer in the new 4E which was created through redistricting. I helped establish the format and mechanisms by which the commission functions. I supported map amendments for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Xi Omega chapter and the 14th Street Business Owner's Collective which provide for increased density allowing development of affordable senior housing and broader commercial options. I also helped establish a standing committee on Pedestrian/Traffic Safety.
ANCs consider a wide range of policies and programs affecting neighborhoods including zoning, traffic, parking, tenant's rights, recreation, street improvements, alcoholic beverage and cannabis administration, police protection, economic development and sanitation. I'll continue to place an emphasis on issues relating to gentrification, health and public safety.
Our community is home to many families. Traffic safety is critical in an environment where children are playing, riding scooters and bicycles. Full implementation of the Vision Zero initiative should be a priority.
As the District's population grows there is an underlying ongoing discord between many longtime and newer residents to our community. There are frequently misunderstandings based on cultural differences. I plan to continue to promote civility and recognition of implicit biases that increase confusion.
